DEFINITION: Semiotics

Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation.

It is also called semiotic studies or semiology, and to thoroughly cover signification and communication studies, it is divided into three branches:
  • Semantics: Relation between signs and the things to which they refer
  • Syntactics: Relations among sings in formal structures
  • Pragmatics: Relation between signs and their effects on those (people) who use them
